Short answer: most washi tape is not waterproof. Standard washi is thin paper with a low-tack adhesive — one spilled drink and the edges curl. But there's a second kind of washi tape, made from PET plastic instead of paper, that wipes clean and stays stuck. If you've ever lost a border to a water ring, this is the post that explains why — and which one to buy.
Why paper washi tape fails around water
Paper washi tape is made from washi paper — long plant fibers pressed thin, backed with a gentle adhesive. The paper itself is actually strong for its weight. The problem is the water: paper fibers swell when wet, the adhesive softens, and the tape lifts at the edges as it dries. A single droplet won't ruin it, but a humid bag, a wet coffee ring, or glue-heavy layering will.
What PET washi tape is (and why it's different)
PET tape swaps the paper backing for polyethylene terephthalate — the same clear, flexible plastic used in water bottles. The pattern is printed in white ink on the back, so it shows crisp on any page color, including black. Water sits on top of PET instead of soaking in: wipe it off, and the tape looks untouched.
The practical differences:
| Feature | Paper washi | PET washi |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Swells, edges lift | Wipes clean |
| On dark pages | Pattern fades | White ink stays crisp |
| Texture | Matte, tears easily | Smooth, more tear-resistant |
| Removal | Peels cleanly | Peels but holds harder |
The test we ran
We stuck matching borders of both tapes on a journal page, then gave each spread three things a journal actually endures: a wet glue dot underneath, a damp cloth wiped across the surface, and a closed book left in a humid room overnight.
The paper tape survived the dry hours fine — then lifted at both ends after the damp wipe. The PET tape didn't move. Neither showed wrinkles, but only one was still flat the next morning.
So which one should you buy?
Choose paper washi if your spreads live indoors and you like the matte, fibrous look — it's easier to tear by hand and peels off without residue. Choose PET if you journal on the go, layer over wet media, use dark paper, or just never want to think about water again.
For dark spreads and December pages, our Christmas PET tape runs white-ink borders that stay crisp on black paper — the paper equivalent simply disappears there. Browse the full washi and decorative tape collection for both kinds.
FAQ
Is washi tape sticky enough for journal pages?
Yes — both paper and PET washi use low-tack pressure adhesive designed to hold paper firmly but peel off without tearing. PET holds noticeably harder; if you reposition a lot, paper is more forgiving.
Is washi tape acid-free?
Most quality washi tape is acid-free, which is why it's favored over clear tape in journals — it won't yellow your pages over the years.
The one-line answer
Paper washi tape hates water; PET washi tape doesn't notice it. Buy paper for texture, buy PET for everywhere else.
